Lumen5 Review: The Blogging Secret for Turning Articles Into Videos

I publish 3–4 blog posts per week. For two years, I watched those posts disappear into the internet with minimal social media distribution. LinkedIn posts with text got decent reach; LinkedIn posts with video got much better reach.

But I wasn't making video versions of my articles because it took too long. A proper 60-second LinkedIn video from a blog post took 2–3 hours of writing, recording, and editing. I'd make one per month if I was disciplined.

Lumen5 changed that. My current workflow: write blog post, paste URL into Lumen5, spend 20 minutes customizing, post video to LinkedIn and Instagram. Each post gets a video version. Engagement on the video posts is consistently 3–4x higher than text-only posts.

How Lumen5's Blog-to-Video Workflow Actually Works

Lumen5's core feature is genuinely impressive in practice. The process:

Step 1: Input your content Options: paste a blog post URL, paste text directly, or write a script from scratch. The URL option is the most useful — Lumen5 fetches the content and processes it automatically.

Step 2: AI extracts and scripts Lumen5's AI reads the blog content and:

• Identifies the key points (typically 5–8 for a 1,000-word post)
• Creates one video scene per key point
• Writes concise text overlay language for each scene (shortened from the original)
• Suggests pacing and scene length

Step 3: Review and edit scenes You review each of the 5–8 scenes. For each scene:

• Edit the text overlay if needed
• Swap stock footage (Lumen5's library is large; AI suggestions are usually reasonable)
• Adjust scene duration
• Modify font style, color, text placement

Step 4: Add final touches

• Select background music (Lumen5's library includes licensed tracks)
• Add your logo and brand colors
• Review the full video at 1x speed

Step 5: Export Choose resolution and format; export typically takes 2–5 minutes.

My time per video: 18–25 minutes for a blog post I've already written.

Video Format and Quality

Lumen5 produces a specific type of video: text-on-screen with matching stock footage. If you've ever watched a LinkedIn video that shows key quotes or statistics in animated text overlays while relevant footage plays behind them, that's Lumen5's aesthetic.

This format works well for social media because:

• Many LinkedIn/Instagram users watch without sound — text on screen communicates without audio
• The format is familiar and trusted for informational content
• It's scannable — viewers can extract value in 30 seconds

It's not cinematic. It's not suitable for YouTube long-form content. Within its specific use case (short social media informational video), it's clean and professional.

Brand Customization

Lumen5's brand kit allows you to set:

• Brand colors (applied to text overlays and accent elements)
• Logo (overlaid in corner)
• Preferred fonts
• Default aspect ratio (16:9, 9:16, 1:1 — choose based on platform)

Once the brand kit is configured, every video automatically reflects your brand. This is meaningful for businesses producing regular content — consistent visual identity without per-video design effort.

Lumen5 vs. Invideo AI for Content Repurposing

For pure blog-to-social-media video, Lumen5's workflow is more polished. For creating original marketing videos with voiceover, Invideo AI is more full-featured.

What Lumen5 Doesn't Do Well

Voiceover isn't built-in. Lumen5's base product is visual-only — text on screen, no narration. Adding a voiceover requires either recording your own audio or using the AI voiceover add-on (available at additional cost). For social media videos without voiceover, this is fine. For more complete videos, it's a limitation.

Limited for long-form YouTube. Lumen5's output format isn't right for YouTube. If you need YouTube videos, look at Invideo AI or manual production.

Stock footage can feel generic. Lumen5 has a large library, but footage for abstract or niche topics can be generic. The AI suggestions are often serviceable but occasionally off-topic.
