Midjourney Photography Prompts: Realistic Portrait and Landscape Styles
I spent three months trying to figure out why my Midjourney photography prompts kept producing images that looked almost real β but not quite. Everything was slightly too perfect. Too smooth. Like looking at someone through slightly frosted glass.
The fix turned out to be one word I was using incorrectly: "photography." That word alone isn't specific enough. Midjourney has seen millions of photographs, and they range from phone snapshots to Ansel Adams prints. What I needed was to tell it which kind of photography β and that meant learning to think like a photographer, not just a prompt writer.
This guide covers everything that separates a generic "photography prompt" from one that produces images you'd genuinely think came from a camera.
Why Photography Prompts Are Different
Most Midjourney prompts are creating something that doesn't exist. A fantasy city, a fictional character, an abstract concept. Photography prompts are trying to recreate a realistic visual language that already exists in the world β and Midjourney needs specific signals to know which part of that language to draw from.
The difference between "portrait photography" and "editorial portrait, Canon 85mm f/1.4, catchlight in eyes, shallow depth of field, Rembrandt lighting" is enormous. The second one gives the model four separate vectors to pull on. Each one narrows the possibility space toward something real.
Portrait Photography Prompts
Natural Light Portraits
Natural light portraits are the most popular photography style on Midjourney, and with good reason β the model handles soft, directional light beautifully.
editorial portrait of a woman in her 30s, window light from the left, slight under-exposure, Sony A7 III, 85mm f/1.8, warm skin tones, natural minimal makeup, documentary feel --ar 2:3 --style raw
golden hour portrait, young man looking slightly off-camera, backlit with rim light creating a halo effect, Canon 5D Mark IV, 135mm f/2, warm amber tones, shallow depth of field --ar 3:4
overcast outdoor portrait, teenage girl in an autumn park, soft diffused natural light, Fujifilm X-T4 film simulation, 56mm f/1.2, muted warm tones, candid --ar 2:3
environmental portrait of an artist in her studio, surrounded by canvases and paint, morning light through large warehouse windows, natural shadow and highlight, documentary photography --ar 3:2
Studio and Controlled Lighting Portraits
classic studio headshot, man in his 50s, Rembrandt lighting, dark grey background, Canon EOS R5, 85mm, professional corporate photography, sharp --ar 1:1 --style raw
fashion editorial portrait, high-key lighting, woman in white against white background, beauty photography, catchlight visible in eyes, Broncolor studio flash, sharp detail --ar 2:3
dramatic split lighting portrait, side-lit, one half of face in shadow, black and white, high contrast, silver gelatin print aesthetic, timeless --ar 1:1
butterfly lighting portrait, beauty close-up, perfect symmetry, subtle catchlight, smooth skin without over-retouching, Hasselblad medium format look, commercial photography --ar 3:4
Character Study Portraits
These prompts aim for portraits that feel like they tell a story.
portrait of an elderly woman from rural Morocco, deep wrinkles, warm direct gaze, blue eyes, traditional dress, strong afternoon sidelight, Steve McCurry style documentary portrait --ar 3:4
candid portrait of a street musician mid-performance, eyes closed, feeling the music, blurred crowd background, 35mm street photography, available light, New York City --ar 2:3
Lighting Reference Table for Portrait Prompts
The most important variable in portrait photography prompts is lighting. Here's what each reference produces:
| Lighting Type | Midjourney Effect | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Rembrandt lighting | Triangular highlight on shadowed cheek, dramatic | Moody character studies |
| Butterfly lighting | Shadow directly under nose, glamorous | Beauty and fashion |
| Window light (soft) | Natural, one-directional, gentle shadows | Lifestyle, editorial |
| Golden hour backlight | Rim light glow, warm tones, halo effect | Romantic, lifestyle |
| Split lighting | Half face lit, half in shadow | High drama, conceptual |
| Overcast diffused | Flat, even, soft shadows | Documentary, candid |
| High-key studio | Bright, minimal shadow, clean | Commercial, corporate |
| Chiaroscuro | Deep shadows, Renaissance painting feel | Fine art, character |
Landscape Photography Prompts
Landscape prompts reward specificity about time of day, weather, and format more than almost any other variable.
Golden Hour and Magic Light Landscapes
Icelandic volcanic landscape at sunset, lupine fields in foreground, snow-capped mountains, dramatic storm light breaking through clouds, Sony 24mm f/1.4, landscape photography, award-winning --ar 21:9
desert canyon at golden hour, long shadows, warm orange and red rock, National Geographic landscape photography, 4x5 large format film look, extraordinary depth --ar 3:2
misty mountain lake at dawn, perfect mirror reflection, fog lifting off the water, Swiss Alps, Nikon Z9 14-24mm ultra-wide, landscape photography, ethereal --ar 16:9
Moody and Dramatic Landscapes
storm approaching over Scottish highlands, dramatic cumulonimbus clouds, shafts of light breaking through, green moorland, cinematic landscape, 16:9 widescreen --ar 16:9
abandoned coastal lighthouse in winter storm, waves crashing, overcast grey sky, wet rocks, documentary landscape photography, Leica Q2, 28mm --ar 3:2
dense Pacific Northwest forest after rain, soft diffused light, ferns and moss in foreground, enormous Douglas firs, atmospheric perspective, environmental photography --ar 3:2
Urban Landscape Photography
Tokyo Shinjuku at blue hour, neon signs beginning to glow, wet streets reflecting color, commuters with umbrellas, Fujifilm Provia film simulation, 23mm, street photography --ar 16:9
New York City aerial, golden hour light cutting between skyscrapers, long shadows, Hudson River in background, aerial photography, 50mm drone lens equivalent --ar 21:9
Havana street scene, colorful colonial buildings, 1950s American cars, late afternoon light, documentary photography, Kodachrome color palette, warm and vibrant --ar 3:2
The Film Photography Effect
One of the most effective tricks for photorealistic Midjourney images is referencing specific film stocks. The model knows these extremely well.
| Film Reference | Effect on Image |
|---|---|
| Kodak Portra 400 | Warm skin tones, gentle grain, soft highlights |
| Fujifilm Provia 100F | Rich saturated colors, fine grain, slightly cool |
| Kodak Tri-X 400 | Classic black and white, visible grain, high contrast |
| Fujifilm Velvia 50 | Hyper-saturated colors, deep shadows, landscapes |
| Ilford HP5 | Softer B&W with natural tonal range |
| Kodak Ektar 100 | Ultra-fine grain, vivid colors, sharp |
portrait of a woman in a summer market, Kodak Portra 400 film, slight grain, warm skin tones, casual candid moment, 35mm film camera aesthetic --ar 2:3
mountain sunset landscape, Fujifilm Velvia 50 film simulation, hyper-saturated oranges and purples, crisp detail, landscape photography --ar 16:9
The --style raw Difference
This is the single most impactful parameter for photography prompts. Midjourney's default mode processes your prompt through its aesthetic model, which often adds a slight painterly quality or stylized look. --style raw bypasses most of that.
Compare these two:
portrait of a man in his 60s, documentary photography, natural light
vs.
portrait of a man in his 60s, documentary photography, natural light --style raw
The second will typically produce something that looks more like an actual photograph. The skin texture is more realistic, the lighting is less "perfect," and the overall feel is grittier and more real. For any prompt where realism is the goal, add --style raw by default.
Black and White Photography Prompts
Black and white prompts deserve their own section because the technique differs significantly from color photography.
black and white street photograph, New York City subway, crowded car, motion blur on commuters, Henri Cartier-Bresson documentary style, Tri-X 400 film, classic photojournalism --ar 3:2
fine art black and white landscape, Ansel Adams style, Half Dome Yosemite, dramatic storm light, large format film, deep shadows and bright highlights, zone system exposure --ar 4:5
black and white environmental portrait, jazz musician in dimly lit club, available light, SebastiΓ£o Salgado style, human dignity, documentary photography --ar 3:4
architectural black and white photography, brutalist building, strong geometric shadows, dramatic sky, contrasting textures of concrete, 24mm wide angle --ar 1:1
Avoiding the Uncanny Valley in Portrait Prompts
The most common complaint about Midjourney portraits is that they sometimes look slightly wrong β eyes off-center, hands with extra fingers, skin that looks a bit plastic. A few prompt strategies help:
Add natural imperfection cues. "Natural skin texture, pores visible, no retouching" signals you want real-looking skin rather than the smoothed perfection Midjourney defaults to.
Reference real photographers. "In the style of Richard Avedon" or "Steve McCurry documentary portrait" anchors the output in a photographic tradition with realistic human subjects.
Avoid symmetry words. "Perfect face" or "symmetrical features" sometimes produces uncanny doll-like results. Leave the beauty assessment to the model.
Use --ar ratios that match real photography. 3:4, 2:3, and 3:2 all correspond to standard camera aspect ratios. Unusual aspect ratios sometimes distort faces.

Combining Portrait and Landscape: Environmental Photography
Some of the most striking Midjourney images come from placing a human subject within a landscape β environmental portraits.
environmental portrait of a Tibetan monk standing in mountain pass, robes blowing in wind, distant Himalayan peaks, documentary photography, dramatic natural light, Canon 24-70mm --ar 16:9
surfer emerging from wave, split water surface shot, tropical clarity, action photography, high shutter speed frozen water drops, Sony 400mm telephoto --ar 3:2
farmer in golden wheat field, late afternoon, long shadows, documentary agricultural photography, backlit, Midwest America, warm and honest --ar 3:2
