Build-Measure-Learn loop, MVP types, Lean Canvas blocks, pivot-or-persevere framework, and innovation accounting.
Developed by Eric Ries, Lean Startup applies lean manufacturing principles to building startups. The core insight: most startups fail not because of bad execution, but because they build something nobody wants.
| Principle | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Build-Measure-Learn | Ship fast, measure results, learn, repeat |
| Validated Learning | Prove assumptions with data, not opinions |
| Minimum Viable Product (MVP) | Smallest thing that tests your key assumption |
Goal: Minimize the time through the loop. The faster you learn, the faster you find product-market fit.
| MVP Type | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Landing page | Describe product, collect signups | Validate demand before building |
| Concierge | Deliver service manually to first users | Prove value without software |
| Wizard of Oz | Appears automated, is actually manual | Fake AI before real AI is built |
| Prototype | Clickable mockup (Figma, InVision) | Test UX without code |
| Pre-sale | Sell before product exists | Validate price and demand |
| Single feature | Build only the core value feature | Ship fast, validate core |
The Lean Canvas (by Ash Maurya) is a modified BMC optimized for startups β focused on problems and solutions rather than operations.
| Block | BMC | Lean Canvas |
|---|---|---|
| Problem | Absent | Explicit β top 3 problems |
| Solution | Value Proposition | Explicit top 3 features |
| Key Metrics | Absent | How you measure success |
| Unfair Advantage | Absent | Can't easily be copied |
| Key Partners | Present | Removed |
| Key Activities | Present | Removed |
| Key Resources | Present | Removed |
List the top 3 problems your target customer has. For each problem, note existing alternatives (what they do today without your product).
Define your Early Adopters specifically β not "everyone." Early adopters are willing to use a rough v1.
A clear, compelling statement of what you do and why you're different:
Example: "Canva: Design anything. Publish anywhere." (Not "a drag-and-drop design tool with templates")
Top 3 features or approaches that solve the problems. Keep it minimal β this is your MVP scope.
The numbers that prove your model is working:
Something you have that cannot be easily replicated:
How you reach customers at each funnel stage (see marketing funnel note).
When a Build-Measure-Learn cycle completes, you decide:
| Signal | Decision | Pivot Type |
|---|---|---|
| Core metric growing, engagement high | Persevere | N/A |
| Core metric flat, wrong customer | Pivot | Customer segment pivot |
| Customers like concept but not features | Pivot | Zoom-in pivot (focus on one feature) |
| Product works but wrong business model | Pivot | Business model pivot |
| Technology isn't working | Pivot | Technology pivot |
| Market too small | Pivot | Market segment pivot |
Traditional accounting doesn't capture startup progress. Innovation accounting uses milestones:
1. Baseline metrics β measure current state honestly
2. Experiment β run MVP tests
3. Pivot or persevere β decide based on whether metrics moved toward the goal
