Paid for impact, not output
Compensation tracks impact, not activity. A top engineer who chooses the right problem and ships a solution that moves a key metric creates orders of magnitude more value than one who efficiently builds the wrong thing. Businesses pay for outcomes, and outcomes depend more on judgment than on raw coding throughput.
Leverage is the multiplier
Elite engineers operate with leverage: they build the system everyone else depends on, automate what others do by hand, make decisions that shape years of work, or unblock entire teams. One high-leverage decision (the right architecture, the avoided rewrite, the platform that 50 engineers build on) is worth more than months of ordinary feature work.
Scope and problem selection
The biggest lever is which problem you work on. High-scope problems — central to the business, technically hard, high-value — pay far more than peripheral ones. Top engineers gravitate to (and are trusted with) the problems that matter most. Judgment about what to work on beats skill at working.
Scarcity of the combination
The market pays for scarcity. Plenty of people can code; far fewer combine strong skill, sound judgment, and the ability to own large scope. That combination is rare, so it commands a premium. It's not 5x the effort — it's a 5x-scarcer bundle of capabilities.
What this means for you
Stop optimizing for output and start optimizing for impact and leverage. Seek high-scope problems tied to business value. Build systems others rely on. Develop judgment about what to build, not just how. Make yourself the person trusted with the problems that matter.
Honest limits
Markets are imperfect — luck, negotiation, company, and timing all affect pay, sometimes more than merit. But the structural driver is real: value, and therefore compensation, follows leverage and judgment.
